Hoengsong and Sokcho. Camp and Pokemon

I haven't taught at every GLPS camp at Minjok Sagwan High School in Gangwon Province, near Wonju, but I have been to many and greatly enjoy them. I probably enjoy them more than the students but I will save that kind of commentary for the end of this post.

It has been six years since I lived in Gangwondo and the places I remember have changed greatly. This post will be something of a tourist's report of my visit.

I had been suffering a slight abdominal pain, low and in front of my left hip joint for nearly a year.  Will trying to get in shape using the rowing machines at camp, something worked the pain is gone!

But I didn't exercise much as the temperature was high all camp.  I think we saw rain twice, both early in the first week of camp.  The rest of the time, we cooked.  I took the dog for walks but she didn't get as much time outside was either of us wanted.
Camp Pictures!
My son on the steps on the right. He joined a class attempting to safely drop eggs from great heights.

A student taught me about Hot Pepper Dragonflies.  This one, Crocothemis servilia only turns such a beautiful red during mating season.

These two of a spider were the only good ones I took.  My phone camera would only focus on the distant sky.  What really drew me to this individual though was his loss of legs.  This is a four-legged spider!

Walking stick.

Some of my students had trouble doing actual research outside rather than just catching critters.

I found this salamander after one of the two rains we experienced.

One weekend, we returned home.  Good for us, but boring to write about.  The next weekend we went to Sokcho.  My son was born there eleven years and a few months ago but he hadn't visited in the six years we'd lived in Busan. He was very interested in seeing our old apartment and seeing what he might remember.

But mostly he was interested in Pokemon Go! In Korea, this game can only be played on Sokcho so far. This audio interview (autoplay) explains why. Basically, Korea is officially at war and Google isn't allowed to publish certain details on its maps in Korea so the resolution isn't good enough for game play (Daum does have that level of details for some reason).  The block of globe that Google aloted to Japan has a funny wing that reaches into one part of Korea - Sokcho - so the game is live there.
Sokcho is Pokemon-crazy with sign everywhere directing you in where to go and how to play.

It is horrifying to think that people are so into Pokemon that they throw their pets into the garbage!
Below, Ulsan Bowi was barely visible through the heat haze.

After cooking in the direct sunlight, we found my only friend who still lives in Sokcho after six years and hung out on the beach.

These tetrahedrons are huge and break up the motion of the surf to protect the piers.  They are mostly jumbled together so I found the long view below fascinating and unique.

We also swam at Mul-Nori Soo-young Jang, a concrete box near the camp.  I didn't take any pictures but here is what I can tell you. Yoo-bi Castle Pension has rooms and campsite for rent. They also have a pool filled by stream water that is wonderfully refreshing. To find it, use Daum maps and enter "강원 횡성군 둔내면 영랑리 119 새주소강원 횡성군 둔내면 강변로영랑6길 115" in the search bar - hope you have the Hangeul character set on your computer.

A Winter Tradition

We had a great swim.  The final still shows west-bound traffic on highway 50.  A whole lot of  people came to see us swim.  One hour to get to the beach, five hours to get back to camp!

Surfers from Gangwon - and elsewhere - try to compete in Busan

The original post is here at my new blog.  Note the final few paragraphs where I discuss the typhoon's effect on Gangwondo and nationally.

Polar Bear Swim

I enjoy Polar Bear Swims and am looking forward to doing at least one this winter.

These swims are usually festive events, and I did them at Bracebridge's Winter Carnival.  Here, we have three possible days coming up - I am willing to swim on all three days if others will join me.

Who is interested and when?

Friday, December 25: Christmas
A coworker, Jeff, is interested in a Christmas Day swim and he lives about halfway between Sokcho and Gangneung.

Friday, January 1: New Year's Day

February 13-15: Lunar New Year

This should be a link to a link to a video of last year's swim.

Walkway washed out at Sokcho Beach

The Joongang provided this picture from Sokcho Beach:

A billow destroyed a 20-meter-long (66-foot-long) esplanade in Sokcho Beach, Gangwon, on Saturday. The 80-meter-long stretch of the same esplanade collapsed due to billows on Nov. 16. [YONHAP]
-----

Dictionary.com tells me that 'billow' is the right word: it means a great wave.  Still, I think someone at Yonhap or Joongang is depending too much on dictionaries.

Anyway, while I do expect that the proximate cause was a billow, the ultimate cause was smaller waves slowly eroding the beach over several months so that one wave could later complete the job.

Anmok Beach

After work on Friday, I went to Anmok Beach in gangneung. When I left the university, the weather was fine, although I had received a text message that the beach was windy.

Dang! It was cool and very windy. And that means good body surfing.

My friend, who took the pictures, chose not to go in - he was afraid! He also picked a tough place to get out from.
I was rolling and being knocked around so much that he had trouble keeping me in the frame.

I had a great time swimming, but felt exhausted and sandblasted when I came out. I went to my friend's house to see his son and shower a kilo of sand off.
----
While there I saw the perfect bike for my wife. Look. It doesn't have a cross bar that would interfere with a skirt and even has pink accents on the, uh, handlebars bar. Oh, she would look so cute going to work on that bike. It would even be practical as the electric motor would give her a boost when needed.

Once again, a jellyfish bloom

From the Times, a yearly warning of jellyfish.

The article says the jellyfish grow to around two metres in diameter so I am confused by the picture unless the diver on the left side is a child.

I know jellyfish are carnivorous and can eat fish, but I wonder if the jellyfish are being used a scapegoats for overfishing by humans.

Other posts about jellyfish at Gangwon Notes can be found here.

Craigleith Provincial Park

This trip home has been a sort of nostalgia-fest for me as I take the little guy to places I liked. I barely remember Craigleith Park, indeed, I thought it was named Craigleaf, but I did remember the fossils. It was hard to explain that we would not be finding dinosaur fossils but rather much smaller critters, albeit also much older.

Click to embiggen any photo.

It was not a warm day and the wind had lots of room to gather strength before reaching us. Spring jackets were required. Look at that open water behind the little guy!

Along shore at Craigleith Park, the shale is comprised of many layers - and chock full of trilobites and the like.

There was one danger that, so far, we have avoided. We found some poison ivy at the park but stayed away. I hoope the same is true for our trip to an uncle's cottage later this week.

Balm Beach

We had some incredibly hot weather yesterday - a welcome change for the locals as this has been a wet spring and start to summer here.

Pictures are again out of order - not broken but not n the order I took them in. Click on any to enlarge.

To cool off, we had some ice cream. Mom and I ingested ours but GeorgianBayAlex choose to apply his as a salve. Perhaps he was uncertain about the name of the beach: Balm probably refers to the cool water more than the ice cream available nearby.

Mom and the little guy at the edge of the public beach.

The beach was nice although some kids nearby had a very limited vocabulary -there's more than one adjective available.

There was a lot of pollen in the water.

There is also controversy at the beach. In Canada, property owners can only own land to the high water mark of a lake. Practically, that means anyone can walk along a shore. That would be fine except that beachgoers ocassionally leave trash behind - less often, I think, thanvisitors to Sokcho Beach, but frequently enough.

This cottager has put up a fence that actually extends to into the water to deter walkers. You might be able to see burn marks on the fence, which has also been attacked with chainsaws and police are frequently called to the scene.

For Mr. Domestic Bliss

Mr. Bliss, if you wanted to visit my swimming spot, here are the directions (and anyone else, I guess).
Take bus # 1,7, or 9 - but not 1-1, 7-1 or 9-1. Get off at the harbour, turn left at the intersection. You could go straight for a more scenic route, but turning left is a little shorter.
Turn right here (the brown sign is for the lighthouse).
Here is it. I like to swim around the rocks - and there are more further from shore -but also to jump off them.

There is some bad news, though. The water seemed clear yesterday, but I don't know if the barges will churn up the bottom with their dredging. I also don't know why they are dredging here.
Previous posts on swimming there here.

parties in Sokcho

I'm an early-to-bed kind of guy and I have a son who is early-to-rise so parties aren't as thrilling for me as they used to be.

That might be why I hadn't hear about the June 6th Sokcho Beach Apocalypse party.  Apparently, it is being advertised on Facebook but I couldn't find it.  I will be in Donghae for a staff party so I'm going to miss the excitement here - I wonder if Kwandongwife, who will be on duty at the coast Guard office, will be called in to translate for the police.

Clean ocean, clean ...?

I am in the midst of helping my wife translate some slogans for the Coast Guard.  Apparently, the ocean is green as I am seeing that word come up a lot.

How does 'Love the ocean with your heart, clean it with your hands" sound?  "...clean it with your actions"?

Speaking of cleaning, a resort in Switzerland is offering a course in "mountain cleaning".  Yes, it is a spoof and I am late on reporting an April fool's joke, but the idea is a good one.  Do the cleanup, don't just write slogans about it!

part of a carcinogenic Hansel and Gretel Story

Over the last month, upon arriving at work early, I have found the steps to our fifth floor office awash in cigarette butts.  In comparing notes with a coworker, he used the phrase in the title to describe the scene.

The New York Times has an article about the toxicity of cigarette butts. An excerpt:

For many environmentalists, the problem is not just the litter, but the toxicity. Thomas Novotny, a professor of global health at San Diego State University who supports the San Francisco proposal and beach bans elsewhere, said recent experiments had shown that one butt has enough poisons to kill half the minnows in a liter of water — a standard laboratory test for toxins — in 96 hours.

“Butts are full of poisonous substances, including nicotine, which is a pesticide,” Professor Novotny said.

Part of the article describes butts at the beach.  In my youth, after feeding gulls bits from a slice of bread, I would switch to butts found in the sand to trick them for another ten minutes or so.  Clearly, the problem isn't a new one.

Sand sculpting in Donghae

From the Joongang:
...1st Korean International World Sand Sculpting Championship and Exhibition in Donghae 2009. The sand sculpting event, in Gangwon Province, will take place May 16 to June 28 with 30 artists from 15 nations.

The WSSA (World Sand Sculpting Association) says the event finishes on the 17th, while the Korea Times confirms the original dates and specifies the location as Mangsang Beach, just north of Donghae and near the whale museum I visited earlier.
--
As an aside, look at the spelling of Korea in the Google results for my search.

The limping man says

Clean up your fucking sparklers at the beach when you leave!

I am not crippled, but I am limping.  It's ironic that it happened to me as I frequently take some time to collect them and remove them from the beach.
----
Every one knows what a 'sparkler' is, right?  It is a length of wire that has 30 cm or so covered in some bright-burning compound.  When the tip is lit, it will burn brightly and shoot sparks.  It is mostly safe when in someone's hands (although I have been burned once or twice).  The ones I find, twisted and mostly buried in the sand, are half-ass caltrops.

Bad news for swimmers

I often hear of sharks appearing on the south and west coasts in the summer and making their way north through the summer but never heard of any in Gangwon Province.

The El Camino Packer has found a Korea Times article telling us exactly that. Click either link to see the 4 metre shark caught near Donghae. At 1.5 tonnes, I wouldn't want it around while I swam.

The El Camino Packer loves surfing and likely wears a dark wetsuit; the combined silhouette resembles a seal and is the staple food for great whites. He should be especially careful.

I may obey the lifeguards and stay within the buoy-line this year, especially if the buoy-line includes a shark net!

First Prize is Hamilton Island, Second Prize is Muskoka

I paraphrased Major General (Ret'd) Lewis MacKenzie in the title. He was running for office in my district and locals became upset that he thought Ottawa was better than Muskoka. He lost the election. Then he moved out of Muskoka.

Anyway, I applied for the "Best Job In The World" and did not make the shortlist. This summer, instead, I will go home and visit friends in Muskoka.

The BJITW was an advertising ploy by Queensland Tourism. They created a sweetheart of a job that was mostly intended to focus attention on the area. The successful applicant would live on Hamilton Island, enjoy him/her-self and make a video blog each week about his/her activities.

I, and 35,000 others, applied. Today, the shortlist of 50 was announced. I was not on that list.
There was one Korean entry, however. A girl named Gina. Go Gina! I have already voted for her. UPDATED: There are two Korean entrants - I missed Juweon. Go Juweon!

Applications took the form of a video, which had to be one minute. My first application was 1:00:5 or something and was rejected. My second application was a tiny bit shorter and was accepted.

For anyone who cares, here they are (Queensland Tourism doesn't care).

I would link to Gina's video but I am having some difficulties with the URLs - they don't change as I change websites. Maybe later. UPDATED: The link is now added. Hope it works.

Oh, and MacKenzie's quote was along the lines of "First prize is Ottawa, second prize is Muskoka" - he wanted to win the election, but Muskoka was waiting for him if he didn't. Of course, he then moved out of Muskoka so I wonder what third prize was.

Help me get the best job in the world!

About two weeks ago, I applied for the best job in the world. The application took the form of a homemade video. I was rejected because the video needed to be 60.0 seconds or less and mine apparently was 60.1 or so long.

I applied again, it was accepted and you will find a link at the bottom of this post.

The "Best Job" is really a marketing tool by Tourism Queensland to promote their province, their coast and specifically Hamilton Island area. Officially, the duties include swimming and watching fish, cleaning your own pool, some diplomatic duties, promoting the island and making a video blog post every week. Really though, It's a excuse to attract interest to the area.

It is working. They have have hundred of thousands check their website and look into the application process. I think more than ten thousand have applied.

On March second, the selection panel will announce 50 short-listed candidates. At some point after that, the group will be narrowed to eleven; ten that Tourism Queensland select and one chosen by popular vote. These eleven will be flown to Australia for interviews and, well, hoop-jumping.

I think my video is good but I don't know if it is top-fifty good. I consider the selection process to be basically a lottery and I hope mine is good enough to make into the lottery bucket. It is the best I could make and I don't want to give excuses but my old computer and original version of Movie Maker were pushed to their limits. The newer version, free and down-loadable, of Movie Maker doesn't work on my computer: after a refurbishing and memory upgrade, some functionality were lost.

Anyway, I think that voting for the eleventh spot does not take place until after March second. Still, you could rate my video highly if you want. It sure couldn't hurt.

I also suggest looking at other application videos. There are twenty-six that I saw from Korea (evening of Feb 17 -five more days to apply); have a look and give them some love while you're at it.

Note, the videos are little slow loading. Please be patient -with mine, you're welcome to be impatient with the others!

Ashley's video (another entrant from Gangwon)

List of entrants from Korea.

Coincidentally, I see it on Yahoo Canada's home page: a news report with a video link (I think it'll work - it will pop-up, however)

Updated Feb 22: another Gangwon entrant is on the list. Choi.

Nude Beach News

I guess talking about beaches during this time of year ensures people don't forget about them. Still, it seems strange timing to discuss beaches. With or without bathing suits, there would be some sharp nipples at these temperatures.

Anyway, Jeju is considering opening a nude beach.

Jeju provincial government will firstly examine whether the measure would entail any legal problems, and then install necessary facilities for nude sunbathing, including changing rooms, on beaches favored by foreigners. Potential nude beaches include Jungmun Beach, which is connected to luxury hotels in the Jungmun Tourist Resort Complex, and Hamdeok Beach, which is the most popular among vacationers.

"If a nude beach is created in Jeju, it will become the first of its kind in Korea. It will boast openness comparable to famous ocean resorts in Europe and Australia," said Lee Jong-man, Chief of the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Bureau of Jeju Provincial Government.

I see the beaches are intended to attract foreign tourists. Australia, which is mentioned as a model, has lots of foreign tourists (more on that in a later post) but also a domestic population that enjoys topless beaches. The same is true in Europe. I don't think there are that many Koreans who would use the beach - I mean use the beach topless or nude; I am sure there are many who would use it for photography practice.

Indeed, in 2008, a beach near Sokcho was a site for nude photography: Finally on Sunday is a "Sokcho Beach Nude" . Whatever it is, it costs 20,000won, starts at 9:00am and involves nude photos.

There were plans, or discussions for a nude beach in Gangwon, but I haven't heard anything come of them (and I see the link in that post here from 2005 doesn't work any more). Here is what I quoted four years ago: The province's environment, tourism and culture bureau has been toying with different ideas for new tourist attractions, including a nude beach.

``We are going to conduct a series of surveys on tourists this summer about their opinions on a nude beach along the east coast,'' provincial official Lee Myun-ki said.

The link to the Nomad is also dead as he closed his blog a year or more ago. Gee, I could really be talking out my ass for all the working references I have.

First swim of the year

A kindly but non-camera-savvy man held the camera for Mr Domestic bliss and I. Here, I have patched three clips together to make a short-but-coherent whole.

The experience was cold but not terrible. We went in a total of three times and stood on the beach between swims. Mr Domesticbliss claims to want to do it again next week. I'm in!
